You are the product of the 5 people you hang around the most – so who are you hanging out with?
This week I have learnt or more specifically re-learnt the power of association. The influence that the people you hang around have on you both personally and in business.
I was having a conversation with one of my extraordinary mentors, over wine (of course!), and we were talking about a person who’s quickly becoming a person of influence on social media. So many of my colleagues and friends are talking about this person. My mentor made the comment “be careful who you let near your thoughts and values” – and he’s absolutely right, and he obviously knows something I don’t about this influential person!
When making the transition from retailer to retail consultant, coach and mentor, there were people in my world who had been such great supporters of my retail life, but who had me doubt my abilities to positively influence other small business retailers and help them grow their business just like I did. Sometimes all I could hear were their negative words – just like the horrible customer for the day – the one who does nothing else by complain – why do we remember the bad ones and not listen to the 50 positive ones?
So, the people I hang around lift me up, encourage me to go for the big audacious goals, push me, stretch me and challenge me – I love a good challenge!
So my advice to you – surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and the thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.
If you’ve learnt something great this week – something that’s going to help your small retail business grow, evolve or change – please feel free to share, I’d love to hear about it – email me email@example.com and always remember – be great, you never know who you’re inspiring!
